Gregory Smith age 33 of Middlesboro was arrested on Friday night after a foot chase by Middlesboro Police Officer Harvey Johnson. Smith was allegedly caught shoplifting at Walmart. During the chase Smith allegedly tossed a backpack in an attempt to taper with evidence. He was eventually captured in Wendy’s parking lot. According the arrest report he was charged with several offenses.

The Harlan Daily reports
A Wooten man was found guilty of escape in Harlan Circuit Court on Tuesday, with the jury recommending a two-year prison sentence.

David S. Combs, 31, appeared in front of Harlan Circuit Judge Kent Hendrickson to answer a charge of second-degree escape.

According to the indictment, Combs escaped from custody on July 15. He escaped from court security while being transported to the Harlan County Detention Center.

Harlan County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Matt Cope presented evidence to the grand jury resulting in the indictment which was handed down on Sept. 22.

This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Kentucky.

To kick off the week, Governor Matt Bevin signed off on a statewide tornado drill this Tuesday, Feb. 23.

According to a statement from the Governor, severe storms impact lives, social structure and the economy on both local and state levels.

In cooperation with statewide divisions of emergency management, the drill will begin at approximately 10:07 a.m. Tuesday.

The alert will be sent out over all outdoor sirens, weather alert radios, on television and over radio signals.

Lexington Emergency Management public information officer John Bobel said this drill is not to be taken lightly.

“They want people to be ready so that when tornado season actually happens they can take those protective actions and know what to do,” Bobel said.

The statewide drill is set for 10:07 a.m. Tuesday.
